Since the beginning of the series “Sex and the City” ten years ago, the four main female characters have made a place in our sitting rooms. At first sight we may think that only women know their names and thein lives, but the characters are equally popular with the opposite sex. Six series, originally shown on the American channel HBO, were watched by an average of 7.7 million American viewers and it did not take long to gain popularity throughout the rest of the world. Is there anybody who still claims not to know what I am talking about?
The series was based on the column of the same name by Candace Bushnell writing in the New York Observer. Its aim was to look at sex from the woman’s point of view. Relationships, ideas, problems, suffering, lives and last, but not least, sex are shown through the friendship of four successful thirty-year-old women living in New York. If you think that even this brief description sounds feminist, you are wrong. Feminism is far from being the basis of the series. In fact, what we see are modern women and their complicated world. The main character Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) revealed the central idea in the very first episode: „Welcome to the age of guilt. Nobody has breakfast at Tiffany’s and nobody has unforgettable affairs. Instead, we have breakfast at seven o’clock and we try to forget our affairs as soon as possible.”
The hit film, which came to cinemas at the end of May this year, followed the popular series. It also successfully opened in London where the Slovak photographer Gabriel Lovas photographed the stars and captured the atmosphere of the premiere of “Sex and the City”.
