Madagascar Today

img

Madagascar, the fourth largest island in the world, has always been an attractive country not only for its fauna and flora but also for its history.

Rainforests, volcanic lakes, deserts, surrounding tropical islands, baobabs, orchids, lianas, bromeliads, lemurs and chameleons – Madagascar with its capital Anatananarivo has all of these.

The largest part of the population consists of the Malagasy who are divided into approximately twenty other similar tribes with their own tribal languages. French and Malagasy are the official languages. The main, but not the only religion here, is animism, which uses magic formulae or ritual animal sacrifices.

The independent development of Madagascar was ended by the war between France and Madagascar in 1883–1885. The former independent Kingdom of Madagascar became a French colony in 1896. Since 1946 the country has had the status of a French transatlantic territory. In 1958 the Malagasy Republic was proclaimed an autonomous state within the French Community and in 1960 the Republic of Madagascar gained its independence. In 1975 Madagascar began to develop socialism when financial institutions, natural resources, several industries and agriculture were nationalised. Only in the early 90s has the country returned to a parliamentary democracy. In 1992 a new democratic convention was approved in a referendum.
