Creating Your Own Entrepreneurial Luck

img

What makes the difference between successful and unsuccessful entrepreneurs? It cannot be talent, education, vision or perseverance. While these characteristics may be important indeed, there are still many unsuccessful entrepreneurs who are talented, well educated, persistent and visionary. The real difference is neither of these qualities but rather something else - luck. Successful entrepreneurs are lucky.

Luck is no accident
To be more precise, they do not wait for luck to happen but they create conditions for luck to occur.

For example, Arnold Schwarzenegger, while mostly known as a bodybuilder, movie star and the Governor of California, is a very successful entrepreneur not just in the fitness and movie business but also in real estate. As a young man he ventured out to America from Austria to pursue his luck. Despite his strong accent and hard to pronounce name he broke through to the top of not just one but three very competitive fields. To Arnold, just like any other successful entrepreneur, success happened by luck but not by accident.

Four conditions of luck
Luck is not a matter of chance but a matter of choice. Like the word and universal symbol of luck – a four-leaf clover – it has four elements.

Location: Like in the game of football, great players seem to always be at the right place at the right time to score. Successful entrepreneurs know that and organise their time to be able to do the same. Luck starts by putting yourself at the right place at the right time.

Understanding: Once in the right location a footballer needs to understand why he is there – to kick the ball. Similarly entrepreneurs succeed by understanding their role in the game of creating and leveraging value. They are on the pitch to play, not to watch.

Connections: Entrepreneurship is a team game just like football. You may be at the right time at the right place perfectly positioned to kick the ball, but if you are alone there is no one to pass the ball to you. Creating luck requires your having created the connections to the right people who will pass lucrative business opportunities to you.

Knowledge: Once you have the opportunities – the entrepreneurial balls – coming your way, you need to know what to do with them; how to kick the ball in order to score a goal. This knowledge only comes from playing the game. The more you play the more you know. The sooner you start playing the sooner you will start creating your own luck.

The good news for all of us is that creating luck is not about investing money but about investing your time. As successful entrepreneurs know, the better you invest your time the luckier you become!
