The national nature monument Ochtinská Aragonite Cave presents a unique natural phenomenon attractive for the abundance and diversity of its aragonite fill and for its peculiar genesis of underground passages. The cave is situated in the Ochtiná cryptokarst and offers 230 m of accessible passages.
The Cave is called “Aragonite” due to its fill which was formed in specific hydro-chemical and climatic conditions in closed underground passages. Aragonite is a very delicate substance and therefore great care must be taken to maintain the original micro-climatic conditions of the underground area. Another risk factor causing aragonite fill corrosion is the condensation of steam breathed out by visitors. This has led to only a limited number of visitors being allowed in the cave on each individual tour.
The cave was discovered by chance in 1954 while a geological survey tunnel
was being drilled. Between 1966 –1967 the entrance tunnel was drilled and in
1968 they began building paths and installing an illumination system in the
cave. Once access work was finished, the cave was officially opened to the
public on 1 July 1972. Since 1997 new electric installation is being used in
the cave.
In 1972 the cave was declared a protected nature formation. In December
1995 the cave was inscribed on the World Nature Heritage list under the
nomination project of The Caves of the Slovak and Aggtelek Karst. Since
1996 the cave has been considered a national nature monument.
Thanks to its easy accessibility to tourists and its speleological uniqueness
the cave belongs among the most popular in Slovakia.
