Belianska Cave extends to a length of 3,641 m and is one of the most widely visited Slovak caves open to the public, its popularity due in part to the introduction in recent years of speleoclimatic health retreats.
Beside its bizarre rock formations, the cave is also famous for its rich calcite content: flowstone waterfalls, pagoda-like stalagmites and various forms of stalactites. 7 species of bats find refuge inside the cave, the most dominant being the Greater Mouse-Eared Bat (Myotis myotis), the Whiskered Bat (Myotis mystacinus), Brandt’s Bat (Myotis brandtii) and Geoffroy’s Bat (Myotis emarginatus). Small invertebrates such as the crustacean Bathynella natans can also be found in the cave pools.
An entry to the cave was first discovered by gold miners as evidenced by
inscriptions from 1713 and 1731 on the rock walls. The entrance to the cave
was then rediscovered in 1826 and new parts of the cave have been discovered
since. The introduction of an illumination system in 1896 placed the cave
among the first power-illuminated caves in Europe.
The cave was declared a protected nature formation in 1979 and a national
nature monument in 1996. Even though people have been showing interest in the
cave’s peculiarities for over 125 years, its geological formation laws
still remain somewhat a mystery.
A tour of the cave will be a pleasant addition to the itinerary of many
visitors to the High and Belianske Tatras. Thanks to its proximity to the Polish
border it is a popular destination for Polish tourists.
